Notably, in the Julian calendar observed by Orthodox Churches, New Year’s festivities extend to January 14, 2024.
The Chinese New Year, set for February 10, 2024, ushers in the ‘Year of the Dragon,’ specifically the wood dragon year, symbolizing authority, power, prosperity, and good fortune in Chinese culture.
Looking ahead to 2024, a whirlwind of political, social, and economic activities is anticipated globally. Elections will be held in various countries, including the USA, UK, Venezuela, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, and Bangladesh. In Africa, elections are scheduled in Algeria, Botswana, Ghana, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, South Sudan, and Tunisia.
A highlight of the year will be the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024—an unprecedented event in France. South Africa’s 2024 elections mark a significant milestone post-apartheid, with potential shifts in political dynamics.
The ANC’s popularity in South Africa faced challenges in 2021, and a coalition of opposition parties may impact the upcoming elections. Meanwhile, South Sudan eyes long-awaited general elections in December 2024, and the USA anticipates a rematch between President Joe Biden and Donald Trump on November 5, 2024.
India, boasting the world’s largest democracy, gears up for general elections in April-May 2024, with around 1 billion voters expected to participate. Incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi faces competition from Nehru’s Congress party.
